AN INTRODUCTION TO ST. PETERSBURG:
CITY CENTRE AND VASILIEVSKII ISLAND

The main thoroughfare is Nevski Prospekt which cuts into the middle of the heart of St. Petersburg. To the North of Nevski is the Triangle which is formed by the Fontaka canal and the Neva is packed to the brim of the main cultural attractions as well as loads of restaurants and bars for great entertainment. The Russian Museum as well as the Mussorgsky Concert Hall along with the Winter Palace and the lovely Palace Square, and not forgetting the Church on Spilled blood, while down the road is the Philharmonia. To the south of Nevski Prospekt is the semi circular Kazan Cathedral with its lovely columns and is so impressive. Further down the street is the Gostinyi Dvor which is the central department store.
A large part of the tourists time in St. Petersburg is spent in this area and the street Nevski is busy until all hours of the night and is such an attraction. To escape all the congestion and groups of tourists, head of for some peace to the Summer Gardens that are just north of the triangle.

North west of St. Petersburg city centre is the Vasilievskii Island which cuts the river Neva into the Bigger and Lesser Nevas. Although the island has taken part in much of the city’s history, it is now a quiet residential part of the city.
Varsilevski was intended to be the centre of the city in Peter the Greats plans and he persuaded many merchants and nobility to settle here. The Island location was too impossible to set up a city centre here. And thus Nevskii Prospekt was reinstated as the main hub of the city.
To the east of the island are several museums like the Kunstkammer museum and particularly the Naval museum which is housed in the old stock exchange building as well as the State University. There is a vast awe inspiring Russian style designed residential building which is located just westwards from Primorskaia metro.
