Vladimirskaia is a great shopping area and also has museums like
the Dostoevskii Museum on Ulitsa Marata. The area around Chernyshevskaia
metro and Liteinyi Prospekt are much quieter spots, although the
area has the former St. Petersburg KGB offices here.
One maybe needs to take the train to find these beautiful jewels
littered around the outskirts of the city. Although most of them
were taken over by the Germans in the World War II, they have been
continuously restored ever since and are really a taste of what style
the pre- Communist rulers of Russia enjoyed. The first place worth
seeing is the Peterhof, which was built on Peter the Greats orders
to celebrate the victory of Russia over Sweden. Also the huge Catherine
Palace on Tsarskoe Selo is a real grand affair. Other sites to see,
although not as impressive, but still worth a visit are the Oranienbaum,
the Gatchina and the Pavlovsk. |
