The Russian Film industry is going through some tough times at the
moment, with Hollywood stealing the show on a daily basis. The
Shiny Crystal Palace around the Nevski Prospekt is the place to
go for some latest realeases and double check to see are the films
in English with Russian subtitles.
More of the Hollywood films are shown at the Barrikada, although
it has much nicer surroundings.
For Russian films, visit the Spartak which also has some great foreign
imports which might interest you more and the latest news about the
Spartak is that it gives headphones to hear the English version of
the films. The Leningrad cinema and the Dom Kino are also showing
the new releases of Hollywood and also showing some Russian films
as well.
A Russian film that did well recently was the Barber of Siberia as
well as the Brat movies.
Theatrical Arts is of a very high standard in the city. The top venue
in the city is the Bolshoi Drama Theatre on the Fontanka canal which
is mainly composed of Russian work with a hint of Western style.
The Alexsandrinskii Theatre is mainly involved with Russian and Soviet
material and is housed in a fine Rossi designed auditorium.
For more Russian material, take yourself down to the Malyi Drama
Theatre or else visit the Konissarzhevskaia Drama Theatre which is
just off Palace Square and is more inclined to have classical works.
The Baltiiskii Dom has performances from various drama groups, but
it also hosts some great rock and pop concerts.
