Music and drama are very much part of St. Petersburg’s cultural
life and are integral components of the city’s identity and
self confidence.
This city has produced many great composers like Tchaikovsky and
Shostakovich as well as Rimsky Korsakov. The Kirov Ballet is also
from St. Petersburg and is a credit to the city. Due to financial
hard times of its city, many of the music ensembles have to tour
the world to gain financially. The city is recognised as a classical
music lovers paradise.
Tourists try their best to get tickets to the Mariinskii Theatre
which was originally known as the Kirov, and is definitely the jewel
of St. Petersburg’s cultural life. One can see all the major
premieres here and the tourists flock to see major Russian works
like Swan Lake and the Nutcracker.
Try the Mussorgsky Theatre on Arts Square if you like the ballet
or the Opera. This place would not be as posh as the Mariinskii theatre,
but is also worth a look. The Philharmonia also on Arts Square has
symphony concerts as well as the Glinka Kapella which is just beside
the Palace Square.
For a more intimate performance one can go to the theatres where
only the elite use to go, like the Hermitage theatre or the Lusupov
Theatre which are old relics of the past. Classical musicals are
also on show at the Smolnyi Cathedral.
