North of the city is the famous Staraia Derevnia where Prince Charles has dined
before and the prices quite affordable. On the island of Vasilievskii is the
Russian restaurant of Restoran as well as the elegant Custom House restaurant
which is very popular.
Pay a visit to Kafe Idiot which is a relaxing place to spend some time and try
out the vegetarian dishes. Nearby the Isaacs Cathedral is the Crocodile which
is relatively cheap which offers both Russian and European cuisine as well as
the Senat bar which is quite up market and has a lovely restaurant.
A blast from the past would be the Kafe Saint Petersburg on the Griboedova Kanal
and is medium priced, Valhall is more a Viking style restaurant with European
and Russian food available. Valhalla is the Viking name for heavan. Also there
is the Taleon Club which is quite up market and is nearby the Nevski Prospekt.
One can tell how posh a place is by the expensive mercedes and BMWs outside the
premises.
The Podvorie restaurant is considered the most Russian of all Russia’s
restaurants and the likes of Jacques Chirac and Prince Charles have been dining
here on their travels.
Many immigrants in the city from former Soviet republics have brought their own
style of cooking with them. Georgian restaurants like the Kavkaz cafe and beside
Bolshoi Prospekt one can find Pirosmani restaurant which serves very tasty food.
The Bagrationi on Liteinyi Prospekt offers great value. The Kafe Lagidze has
fine Georgian fare with its skewered meat and its khachipury.
The Ukrainian restaurant called Shinok has great traditional fare to choose from
and has a Ukrainian setting which is quite different than the typical Russian
setting.
