Near enough to the Admiralty, which is just off Palace Square,
is the bronze statue of Peter the Great which was designed by Falconet
in 1782 on the orders of Catherine the Great. It sits on a granite
obelisk which weighs 600 tons. When married couples get married,
their first stop for a photo shoot is usually at the statue, as
it is believed to bring good luck on any marriage. Behind the statue
one cannot miss the huge St. Isaacs cathedral which is considered
the highest cathedral in the world.
From Palace Square, walk on to the Nevski Prospekt which is along
the Moka canal. One can see the newly renovated Kapella building
just over the canal off the Square and also the 18th century Stroganov
Palace that was built in 1754 on the other side of the street which
was designed by the Italian Rastrelli. The Kazan Cathedral was built
in 1811 by Andrei Voronikhin. This cathedral has a lovely semi circular
Corinthian colonnade with 96 high columns and is almost the dominant
feature in this elegant part of town.
On the other side of the street is the major bookstore Dom Knigi,
a building with a fine granite facade and a glass tower with a globe
on top. The building was built at the turn of the century and was
the property of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.
