Down at the Kanal Griboedova is the Church on Spilled Blood. There
are many cafes and restaurants here and one can check out the Laima
Bistro for some Soviet Fast Food.
At the back end of the church, take a left and you will come to the
Arts Square which was designed by Carlo Rossi, and has many cultural
attractions around the place like the Russian Museum, the Apartment
museum of Blok the poet, the Petersburg Philharmonia, the Mussorgsky
Opera and Ballet house. There is a statue of Pushkin in the public
garden in the centre of the Square.
One can easily head back to Nevski Prospekt from here and go shopping
in the likes of Gostinyi Dvor, which is a two storey Shopping Complex
built around 1786. Across from it is the Passazh Department stores
which is also one of the largest and most famous shopping stores
in the city.
On the south end of Nevskii Prospekt and you will find Ostrovskii
Square where you can see the statue of Catherine the Great which
was built in 1974. Keep walking further and you will see the Anichkov
Palace and the colonnaded Kabinet building of Alexander I, where
beside it is the Anichov Bridge which spans the Fontanka canal. One
can stop here for a bite to eat at the Propaganda on the far side
of the Fontanka, or else five minutes away you will find the forever
popular haunt, La Cucaracha Mexican taco Restaurant.
